CinefestOZ acknowledges the Wardandi, Piblemen, Menang and Yawuru people, the spiritual and cultural custodians of this land on which we live and work. We honour and respect the significant role First Nations people play in our community and in guiding us and allowing our festival to flourish.
Aquarius
CinefestOZ welcomes special guest Wendy Champagne for the screening of Aquarius and Q&A post film.
It was the dawning of a new age. In 1973 activists, hippies and radicals headed to the tiny dairy town of Nimbin in New South Wales for a festival known as ‘Aquarius’. They were to change Nimbin forever, and perhaps they helped to change the world…
The 300 residents of Nimbin had hopes that the influx of strange long-hairs would bring the much-desired tourism boost they had yearned for. Thousands arrived from all over Australia and beyond, with all manner of gear including musical instruments, experimental toilets, saunas, acrobatic gear, and herbally-enabled bliss. Clothing was strictly optional.
An inevitable fallout ensued, but as this transportive and illuminating new documentary shows, the hippies absolutely were onto something, and as we look back half a century on, there is still much to learn from all that went on...
