CinefestOZ acknowledges the Wardandi, Piblemen, Menang and Yawuru people, the spiritual and cultural custodians of this land on which we live and work. We honour and respect the significant role First Nations people play in our community and in guiding us and allowing our festival to flourish.
We Were Dangerous
New Zealand, 1954, and things are not much fun for “delinquent” high school students Nellie (The Wilds’ Erana James), Louisa and Daisy. Each of them has been sent to a reform school for various transgressions by their uber-uptight carers. So far, so boring, but when Nellie attempts a midnight escape, Matron threatens to pack them off to somewhere even more remote: the School for Incorrigible and Delinquent Girls, away from the mainland on an island!
The rugged beauty of Ōtamahua (off NZ’s South Island) is the backdrop for this lively tale of friendship and resistance. And amidst all its deadpan Kiwi charm, We Were Dangerous has serious things to say about culture, repression and bodies under colonial rule. As one character remarks, “It’s very difficult to redeem a girl who believes there’s nothing wrong with her.”
